Most home comfort systems are comprised of two parts: the indoor unit, which includes the furnace and/or an air handler, and the outdoor unit. The outdoor unit is responsible for cooling the air before it sends the cooled air to the indoor unit. The indoor unit then circulates the cooled air throughout your home. These indoor and outdoor units are designed so that they work together. Match this with an appropriate furnace or air handler and the result is a system that provides maximum efficiency as well as an extended system life.

Below are listed the major parts of an air conditioning system:

Compressor (outdoors):

This is the electric pump, (or heart of the system), that circulates refrigerant in a closed loop going between the condenser and the evaporator coils. Compressors are available in several varieties.

Condenser coil (outdoors):

This is a network of tubes which is filled with refrigerant. They remove heat from the heated gas refrigerant. Then they convert the refrigerant into a liquid form. Any excess heat will escape to the air outdoors.

Fan (outdoors):

The function of the fan is to pull air in through the condenser coil so that heat can be dispersed.

Evaporator coil (indoors):

This is also a network of tubes (like the condenser coil) that is filled with refrigerant. Its job is to remove heat and moisture from the air while the refrigerant evaporates back into a gas.

Air handling unit (indoors):

This includes the blower and the related portion of the AC system which moves the air through the ducts.

Air filters (indoors):

The job of the air filter elements is to trap dust, pollen, and other such airborne particles. Air filters are important because they impact both the reliability of the AC system and the health of the air in the home.

Drainage system and pan (indoors):

The normal condensation process of an air conditioner will produce a significant amount of water. This is a by-product of the operation of the AC system. A central A/C unit has a system of pipes whose function is to carry the condensed water to the outside of the home or building.

Occasionally this piping requires flushing which will prevent it from getting clogged with possible algae or other particles. This type of maintenance should be done by your service company every time you have your yearly system tune-up. The inside portion of your air conditioning system should have an emergency drain pan. This is used in case the main drain lines become blocked. The pan includes an automatic cut-off switch which will turn off the AC system if the pan fills with water. Without this function water will run out of the pan and onto your ceiling or cause damage to what may be below it.

How Air Conditioners were Invented

Modern air conditioning systems were first developed in 1902 when an electrical engineer named Willis Haviland Carrier was tasked with solving a humidity problem in a lithographing and publishing company in New York. The humidity in the air would dampen the paper, making printing difficult. Carrier’s solution was to blow the hot and humid air across cold pipes, and as cold air cannot hold as much moisture as hot air, the humidity was reduced. And of course, an extra side effect was that the air also became cooler.

The Science behind Air Conditioners

Modern air conditioners are based on a simple scientific phenomenon, which is that when liquid turns into a gas, it absorbs heat. This process, called phase conversion, is stimulated by special chemicals which evaporate and repeatedly condense through a coil system.

The other main part of the air conditioning process is the numerous fans which are used to blow the air across the cold coils which include the chemical compounds.

The In and Outs of AC Units

There are two distinct processes in successful air conditioning – the intake of warm air, and the output of compressed and cooled gas for conversion back to liquid.

For an efficient air conditioner, the gas has to be converted back into a liquid, and this is achieved by compressing it under high pressure, creating extra heat which is then pumped outside using another set of coils called condenser coils. As it turns back into a liquid, the process can start all over again, giving a continual cycle or air cooling.


The temperature of the gas or liquid is a key aspect of an air conditioning unit, so they have a thermostat which continually monitors and regulates it. There is also a filter which removes particles, meaning that air conditioners are a great solution for people with allergies to dust and other airborne particles. Through the very nature of the process, as shown in the very first air conditioners, they also act as dehumidifiers, and on humid days can also dispel an amount of water which was in the extra-humid air.

Types of Air Conditioners

While the processes are the same, there are different types of air conditioners which vary slightly.

The window air conditioners are set inside a window, all in one box, where the cool air is pumped out on the inside, and the hot air, to the outside.

Bigger air conditioners have the temperature controlled through the building’s heating system, and the side that produces the heat is kept in an exterior unit such as the side of your home. In industrial units, you’ll often see these on the roof.

In the winter, many homeowners ask the same question; should I heat my basement? And if so, how? Whether your basement is finished, partially finished, or unfinished it’s important to know how heating your basement can affect the overall comfort of your whole home.

There are several factors to consider when determining whether to heat your basement or not.

Basement Fireplace



The rising heat of the main floor can draw cold air from the basement. This, in turn, can draw cold air across the main floor and can result in cold feet and possible comfort problems. Often the coldest air in your home is in your basement and eventually it will end up being drawn up to the higher levels.


During cold weather basements can become an incubator for possible mold growth, especially when the air is unmoving and stagnant. Warm moist air will condense on the cold foundation walls that can reach dew point temperatures. This will result in moisture and eventually mold growth. Basements that do not have adequate air circulation often smell musty; this is a sure sign of mold growth.

Energy Efficiency

Cold basement air can often result in heat loss in the potable water lines and ductwork of the basement. If the air in the basement is colder than air found in the ducts, some of the heat is going to migrate into the basement. If the heating ducts aren’t sealed on the cold air return side, you will actually draw the cold air out of the basement. This will cause a depressurization which will draw more outdoor air into the basement as well as through rim/band joist leaks.

So what can you do to heat your basement? The first thing you need to look at is improving the insulation in your basement. Hire a contractor to weatherize your basement.

  • Use a foam sealant in the rim/band joists, any wood to concrete joints, and top plates prior to installing the insulation
  • Don’t use a fibrous insulation as this can lead to mold growth because moisture can pass through it to the cold foundation walls.
  • If your foundation walls are below grade, insulate to a minimum of at least R-10.

Once you have addressed the insulation needs of your basement, next you can consider the most efficient ways to heat your basement. Even if you use the existing HVAC system, your basement can often still be quite cold, therefore; you will need an additional heat source.

Consider installing a gas fireplace. A gas fireplace works best if there is a chimney already available. However, if your basement does not have a chimney, then a vent-less gas fireplace could be a good option.

Another great option to consider is to use a radiant heater. These heaters can be installed by your contractor below the floor or even along baseboards.

Finally, another great option for the homeowner who is on a budget is to consider using space heaters which can be easily plugged into a wall.
